An injection is a medical procedure where a medication is introduced into the body using a needle and syringe.
They are commonly done through the intramuscular or subcutaneous route.
Intramuscular injections are administered deep into areas with larger muscle groups, such as the deltoid, thigh or buttock, where the medication is absorbed quickly by the surrounding blood vessels. Examples of medications given through the intramuscular route include most vaccines and select antibiotics,
Subcutaneous injections are given using a shorter and thinner needle, injected at a 45- or 90-degree angle, into the fatty tissue just below the skin. Examples of medications injected through the subcutaneous route include insulin for diabetes and palliative care pain medications such as morphine or fentanyl. Unlike muscle tissue, subcutaneous tissue has fewer blood vessels, which allows the medication to be absorbed slowly over a period of time.
