Losing a loved one is undoubtedly one of life’s most difficult experiences. We hope that, during this emotional time, this article will help ease the death registration process for you.
A Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD) is a document issued by a doctor that certifies a person’s death as a result of known and natural causes. A CCOD is needed to engage a funeral director and make arrangements for cremation or burial. When a loved one passes away at home, call a doctor that can perform a house call to issue a CCOD.
If you require a house call doctor, reach out to us at 62479247 and we will arrange for a doctor to reach your home as soon as possible to help you with the death registration process.
Do note that a doctor can only issue a CCOD on the spot if there is a valid medical report or memo that could help him/her identify the cause of death due to pre-existing medical conditions. If the cause of death is suspected to be unnatural, the doctor will refer the matter to the police.
A death in Singapore will be registered automatically once a doctor certifies the death online. Once registered, a death certificate will be issued digitally. There is no need for the next-of-kin to register the death at a police station. After the doctor has certified the death online, the next-of-kin will have to download the digital death certificate at My Legacy website and save it in his/her personal device for future retrieval. The deceased’s NRIC will be automatically invalidated in ICA’s system once the death is registered.
Once a CCOD has been obtained and the death is registered, a funeral director can be engaged to collect the body from the home, send it for embalming (if required), and deliver the body to the wake location. Your funeral director will be able to assist you in getting the permit from your Town Council if you wish to hold the funeral at a HDB void deck.
